3M are proud to present 3M Thinsulate Climate Control Series

3M Thinsulate window film has been developed to tackle the ever demanding environmental controls placed on existing building stock.

Key Benefits of 3M Thinsulate Window Film - Climate Control Series:

  • Helps Provide increased insulation performance, much like upgrading single glazing to high performance double glazing, and double glazing to high performance triple glazing
  • Helps improve comfort during cold winter months, by reflecting heat back into the room that would otherwise be lost through the glass
  • Solar control elements in the film improves comfort and energy savings in the summer months by rejecting heat during the day
  • Very high visible light transmission film with a neutral appearance that maintains the buildings existing appearance
  • Helps extend the life of furnishings by significantly reducing the harmful UV rays, the largest cause of fading
  • Industry leading comprehensive warranty from 3M
  • Reduces drafts caused by air hitting cold glass and cooling, causing drafts and cold spots

Why use 3M Thinsulate Window Film?

3M Thinsulate window film has a very low reflective appearance making it ideal for installation to properties where the appearance cannot be changed or where installing secondary glazing is not an option.

How does 3M Thinsulate Window Film Climate Control Series Work?

3M Thinsulate works by reflecting radiated heat (long wave infrared radiation) such as the heat emitted from your body, radiators and other warm objects back into the room, rather than it passing through the glass to the outside where it is wasted.

3M Thinsulate allows the building user to retrofit a Low Emissive (Low-E) coating onto existing glass, without changing the appearance of the glass.

In order to understand how 3M Thinsulate works, you will need to understand:

  • What is Emissivity?
  • What is Low-E glass?
  • How does Low-E glass work?

What is Emissivity?

Emissivity is defined as "a materials ability to radiate energy."

Highly reflective materials have a low emissivity value.

Dark coloured materials have a high emissivity value.

In terms of windows we are looking for - the lower the emissivity of the glass the better, as the glass cannot radiate valuable energy from inside our homes through the glass to the outside. As a result the glass has insulating properties.

What is Low-E glass?

In order to understand Low-E glass it is helpful to understand that the energy from the sun is made up of 3 parts:

  • Ultra Violet Light
  • Visible Light
  • Infrared Light

The suns energy reaches the earth in the form of shortwave radiation, but as the suns energy hits the ground it is converted to longwave radiation. The warm ground heats up the air and causes it to rise forming our weather.

Low-E coatings are designed to take advantage of this and act as a "One Way System" in the sense that they have been specifically designed to reject solar shortwave radiation passing through the window (UV and Infrared) so providing heat rejection in the summer time, while allowing the visible light to pass through. Again, the same as a One Way System, the Low-E coating prevents the longwave radiation emitted from warm objects within the room passing back through the glass to the outside.
