Case Study: The refresh and renovation of Prince Charles Hospital

Like many other hospitals, which spend 110% of their time saving lives and taking care of the people who need it most, Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, was in serious need of renovating.

Whilst efficiency and quality of care are top priorities in the hospital, aesthetics come in at a close third. Why? Because the families and loved ones who come to visit the patients need to feel uplifted and comforted while they are there.

It was for this very reason that Interserve approached us at Applied Products. They wanted to create a vibrant, inviting and colourful environments for their new restaurant and Barista areas in the hospital.

Before: the need

There were two areas in the restaurant/Barista section of the hospital that needed to be worked on: the walls and a dividing glass panel. Within this area, the client had three needs:

1. The walls needed to create a visual impact by being vibrant and colourful.

2. The dividing glass panels needed to provide privacy.

3. Both areas needed to resist the chemicals used in the hospital’s rigorous cleaning regime.

After: the result

The walls:

For visual impact and to resist the chlorine-based cleaning products that will be used, Applied Products recommended a full colour digitally printed wallpaper with a matt overlaminate.

To create a real wow factor when visitors entered the restaurant, the digital wall print spanned the whole wall in the seating area, showcasing stunning mountain landscapes that surround Merthyr.

The result was a visually pleasing environment which visitors said made them feel uplifted and at peace.

As well as the visuals of the mountainscapes, the serving area was also given a refresh. Here, the wall was encompassed with abstract images of delicious food to make a different kind of visual impact that was also bold and colourful.

Again, visitors comments were very positive.

The dividing glass panels:

Privacy was the main need when it came to the brief for the dividing glass panels. While we could have recommended a plain standard frosted window film for this, we wanted to keep the theme consistent with bold and vibrant graphics that would uplift visitors.

For this reason, we recommended a full-colour digital print of coffee beans to span the whole width of the panels.

As you can see from the images, the result was very fun and it allowed visitors to easily identify the designated Barista seating area. Not only did this provide the privacy desired, but it also satisfied the brief for making a big and bold visual impact.
